Ever wondered how to sing Happy Birthday in Arabic?
Well, it’s grandma’s birthday! Watch us sing Happy Birthday to her in Arabic. Notice that there is no cake. We’re trying to cut down on calories 🙂 However; we did have some delicious baklava!
sana 7elwa ya gameel = Good year beautiful one (literally) = سنة حلوة يا جميل
sana 7elwa ya gameel is only used in the song. To say happy birthday to someone, you would say: “kol sana wenta tayeb” if you’re addressing a male and “kol sana wenty tayeba” if you’re addressing a female. This literally means, every year and you are well.
On almost every occasion, Egyptians say the same thing: “kol sana went(a/y) tayeb(a)”. This makes things easy 🙂
Kol sana wenta tayeb = كل سنة وأنتَ طيب
Kol sana wenty tayeba = كل سنة وأنتِ طيبة
Kol sana wentom tayebeen = for a group of people = كل سنة وأنتم طيبين
